Sonata Slavonica 2026. Masterclass Bojan Čičić english

Bojan Čičić, baroque violin, Royal College of Music, London, UK

Workshop and teaching topics:

1. Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin by Johann Sebastian Bach
2. Concerto Italiano – Italian Baroque violin concertos by Antonio Vivaldi, Pietro Antonio Locatelli, and
Giuseppe Tartini
3. The Galant style in the violin works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Through this program, he will work with violin students on music from the Baroque and Classical periods.

In his work with students at the Music Academy in Zagreb, Professor Čičić observed that there is considerable interest in music of the 17th and 18th centuries, yet students have limited opportunities to dedicate themselves more deeply to this repertoire. He believes that his experience teaching Baroque violin at the Royal College of Music in London would be of great benefit to all those who wish to gain closer insight into the music of these two centuries.

During the seminar itself, he will focus on the most significant works of 18th-century violin literature, whether it be the virtuosic violin concertos of Italian masters such as A. Vivaldi, P. A. Locatelli, or G. Tartini, the renowned violin concertos of Mozart, or the solo violin works of J. S. Bach.

Participants in this seminar would gain insight into some of the knowledge that the professor himself has acquired over his 20 years of work in the United Kingdom as a freelance artist and educator.

Biography:

Croatian violinist Bojan Čičić has established himself as one of the leading figures on the early music scene, both as a soloist and as a music director.

In addition to being concertmaster of the Academy of Ancient Music, he conducts ensembles such as Lyra Baroque Orchestra, De Nederlandse Bachvereniging, Dunedin Consort, Slovenska filharmonija, and Phion Orchestra of Gelderland & Overijssel.

As a soloist, he has performed with ensembles including the Academy of Ancient Music, the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, Kioi Hall Chamber Orchestra Tokyo, and Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla.
In May 2025, he was appointed Artistic Director of the Lyra Baroque Orchestra in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Professor Čičić founded his own ensemble, Illyria Consort, specializing in lesser-known repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries. Their debut album for Delphian Records, Giovanni Stefano Carbonelli: Sonate da camera, received outstanding reviews and won the Presto Recordings of the Year Award in 2017.
Their collaboration with Marian Consort titled Adriatic Voyage won the same award in 2021. That same year, the album Pyrotechnia, featuring Italian virtuosic violin concertos by Vivaldi, Tartini, and Locatelli, was released (“an exciting musical discovery” — Classical Music Daily).

In 2022, Illyria Consort released the first complete recording of works by Johann Jacob Walther: Scherzi da violino solo (“admirably spontaneous and carefree” — Gramophone), as well as the album of Christmas instrumental music La Notte (“For every December!” — BBC Music Magazine).

Their latest release, Heinrich Biber: Violin Sonatas 1681, was named Recording of the Month in Gramophone.

His recording of J. S. Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas was nominated for Gramophone’s Critic’s Choice 2023 and selected as Editor’s Choice by BBC Music Magazine.

In 2016, Professor Čičić was appointed Professor of Baroque Violin at the Royal College of Music (London), where he is particularly dedicated to training a new generation of musicians in historically informed performance practices.
